 Paris, 1902
 Cover + 17 pages, loose-leaf album
 32x18,4cm

Very interesting album about cosmography made in France in 1902. Couldn&#039;t find any information about the maker Abb&amp;eacute; L.-M. Le Dantec. I suppose it was a schoolbook.

Bibliography of stellar radial velocities /&amp;#8203; by Helmut A. Abt and Eleanor S. Biggs. Compiled at the Kitt Peak National Observatory.

Abt, Helmut A. &amp; Biggs, Eleanor S, (joint author.) Kitt Peak National Observatory

New York : Printed by Latham Process Corp., 1972. 502 pages

The book contains a bibliography of 44,000 references for radial velocities of about 25,000 stars. The individual volumes listed in Table 1 of the Introduction were surveyed for published radial velocities. The authors estimate that 99 percent of stellar radial velocities published by June 1970 are contained in the surveyed volumes. Each record includes star name, HR and HD identifications, RA and Dec (1900), visual magnitude, spectral type, mean velocity corrected for terrestrial motion, number of measures, reference and remarks.

Two volumes with two star maps and several illustrations. Very rare edition. Spine is loose.

August Ferdinand M&amp;ouml;bius (German 17 November 1790 &amp;ndash; 26 September 1868) was a German mathematician and theoretical astronomer. He is best known for his discovery of the M&amp;ouml;bius strip, a non-orientable two-dimensional surface with only one side when embedded in three-dimensional Euclidean space. It was independently discovered by Johann Benedict Listing around the same time. The M&amp;ouml;bius configuration, formed by two mutually inscribed tetrahedra, is also named after him. M&amp;ouml;bius was the first to introduce homogeneous coordinates into projective geometry.

Many mathematical concepts are named after him, including the M&amp;ouml;bius plane, the M&amp;ouml;bius transformations, important in projective geometry, and the M&amp;ouml;bius transform of number theory. His interest in number theory led to the important M&amp;ouml;bius function &amp;mu;(n) and the M&amp;ouml;bius inversion formula. In Euclidean geometry, he systematically developed the use of signed angles and line segments as a way of simplifying and unifying results.

Lampland first went to Lowell Observatory in 1902 when invited by Percival Lowell and Lampland was closely involved with Lowell in planetary observation. He designed cameras used for astronomy and also designed and maintained telescopes, including resilvering the mirror of the 40-inch (1,000 mm) telescope. He also constructed thermocouples and used them to measure temperatures of planets. He won the Royal Photographic Society Medal in 1905 for the camera which he designed for the 24-inch Clark telescope. In 1907 Lampland and Lowell won a Royal Photographic Society exhibition medal for their photographs of the canals of Mars.

Vintage silver print, Excellent,
Portfolio,

Portfolio with 12 vintage silverprint stereoscopic astrophotos with the original German booklet. Rare second serie of twelve stereophotos.

&amp;ldquo;Stereoskophilder vom Sternhimmel. 2. Serie. Von Professor Max Wolf. . Leipzig: Verlag von Johann Ambrosius Barth.

With the exception of pictures of the sun and moon astronomical photographs always look flat. From the nature of the case this must be so for the distances are so great that we can have no effect of perspective. But by properly combining photographs taken at suitable intervals of time the stereoscope introduces a perspective and gives an apparent solidity that must be charming to everyone who is interested in celestial objects.

This series of twelve pictures by Professor Max Wolf are very satisfactory both in choice of subject and in execution. They are as follows
(i) &quot;A Variable Star&quot;; (2) &#039;&#039;A Planet with Moons&quot;; (3) &quot;A Planetoid&quot;
(4) &quot;A Meteor&quot;; (5) &quot;Perrine&#039;s Comet&quot;; (6) &quot;Perrine&#039;s Comet&quot;
(7) &quot;Perrine&#039;s Comet&quot;; (8) &quot;Proper Motion of a Fixed Star&quot;
(9) &quot; The Nebula&quot; ; (10) &quot; The Great Nebula of Orion &quot;
(11) &quot;Surface of the Moon&quot;; (12) &quot;Surface of the Moon.&quot;
The picture of Saturn, showing two of its moons, is particularly interesting.

We would suggest that these pictures might well find their way into the classroom, as few students will fail to be delighted with them.

      <description>]]&gt;Dr. Max Wolf, Stereoskopbilder vom Sternhimmel, 1. Serie 7. Auflage,
 +/- 1920, Germany,
Title, photographers name and edition on the cover,
Vintage silver print, Excellent,
Portfolio,
17  X  9 cm
 Portfolio with 12 vintage silverprint stereoscopic astrophotos with the original German booklet.

“Stereoskophilder vom Sternhimmel. 1.

(i) &quot;A Variable Star&quot;; (2) &#039;&#039;A Planet with Moons&quot;; (3) &quot;A Planetoid&quot;
(4) &quot;A Meteor&quot;; (5) &quot;Perrine&#039;s Comet&quot;; (6) &quot;Perrine&#039;s Comet&quot;
(7) &quot;Perrine&#039;s Comet&quot;; (8) &quot;Proper Motion of a Fixed Star&quot;
(9) &quot; The Nebula&quot; ; (10) &quot; The Great Nebula of Orion &quot;
(11) &quot;Surface of the Moon&quot;; (12) &quot;Surface of the Moon.&quot;
The picture of Saturn, showing two of its moons, is particularly interesting.

We would suggest that these pictures might well find their way into the classroom, as few students will fail to be delighted with them.

Set of four annual reports by the Carnegie Insitution of Washington. The reports describe very well the evolution of the Mount Wilson Observatory.

Mount Wilson Solar Observatory was founded in 1904 by George Ellery Hale under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution of Washington (the word &quot;Solar&quot; was dropped from the name in 1919 soon after the completion of the 100-inch telescope).

Funds to publish the Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way by Barnard had been guaranteed by the Carnegie Institution in 1907. It was finally published by the Carnegie Institution in 1927 as a Carnegie Publication number 247.

The Atlas is the magnum opus of Barnard. The photographs in this Atlas remain a valuable data source for studies of the Milky Way, its star clouds, the numerous open clusters, and especially for the dark regions of the Barnard dark clouds, first made manifest in these photographs. The dark clouds proved to be singularly important in the discovery of dark matter between the stars, rather than voids in the heavens. Barnard was the first astronomer to provide this decisive evidence for their existence from these photographs.

John Charles Duncan&amp;rsquo;s (8 February 1882 - 10 September 1967) chief contribution to astronomy was his photographic demonstration of expansion in the Crab nebula. He is perhaps better known, however, as the author of Astronomy, a standard college textbook for over thirty years, which was illustrated with many of his own excellent photographs of nebulae and galaxies.

The Crab nebula, located in the constellation of Taurus, is still today a fruitful subject for investigation because of its association with the pulsar NP 0532; it is believed to be the remnant of a supernova observed in Japan and China in A.D. 1054. By comparing a photograph taken with the sixty-inch telescope at Mount Wilson in 1909 by George Willis Ritchey with one he took himself in 1921 with the same instrument, Duncan was able to demonstrate outward motions in the filaments of the Crab. He later confirmed these motions with another photograph taken in 1938, thus showing that it was indeed an expanding envelope such as has been observed around other novae.

Fran&amp;ccedil;ois F&amp;eacute;lix Tisserand (1845 &amp;ndash;1896) was a French astronomer born at Nuits-Saint-Georges, C&amp;ocirc;te-d&#039;Or. In 1863 he entered the &amp;Eacute;cole Normale Sup&amp;eacute;rieure, and on leaving he went for a month as professor at the lyc&amp;eacute;e at Metz. Urbain Le Verrier offered him a post in the Paris Observatory, which he entered as astronome adjoint in September 1866. In 1868 he took his doctor&#039;s degree with a thesis on Delaunay&#039;s Method, which he showed to be of much wider scope than had been contemplated by its inventor. Shortly afterwards he went out to Kra Isthmus to observe the 1868 solar eclipse. He was part of a French expedition together with the &amp;Eacute;douard Stephan and Georges Rayet. The French astronomers where accompanied by Mongkut, the King of Siam who had calculated the location and the date of the eclipse by himself two years before and prepared a comfortable watching place for the scientists.

In 1873 he was appointed director of the observatory at Toulouse, where he published his Recueil d&#039;exercices sur le calcul infinitesimal, and in 1874 became corresponding member of the Acad&amp;eacute;mie des Sciences. He took part in the French expeditions of 1874 to Japan, and in 1882 to Martinique to observe the transits of Venus. In 1878 he was elected a member of the Acad&amp;eacute;mie des Sciences in succession to Le Verrier, and became a member of the Bureau des Longitudes. In the same year he was appointed professeur suppliant to Liouville, and in 1883 he succeeded Puiseux in the chair of celestial mechanics at the Sorbonne.

Tisserand always found time to continue his important researches in mathematical astronomy, and the pages of the Comptes rendus bear witness to his activity. His writings relate to almost every branch of celestial mechanics, and are always distinguished by rigour and simplicity in the solution of the most difficult problems. He treated in a masterly manner (Bulletin astronomique, 1889) the theory of the capture of comets by the larger planets, and in this connection published his valuable Criterion for establishing the identity of a periodic comet, whatever may have been the perturbations brought about in its orbit, between successive appearances, by the action of a planet.

The Hoher List Observatory is an astronomical observatory located about 60 km south of Bonn, Germany, near the town of Daun in the mountain range of the Eifel.The observatory is operated by the Argelander Institute for Astronomy of the University of Bonn.

Until the 1940s, Bonn astronomical observations were carried out mainly from Argelander&#039;s old observatory in Bonn itself. With more and more electrical lights in the city, the night sky in town became increasingly brighter, making observations difficult. In search for an alternative location, in 1950, the hill of Hoher List above the village of Schalkenmehren was found to be well suited for astronomical observation. The rural surrounds meant very low sky brightness. It was decided to relocate the Bonn telescopes.

The new observatory was inaugurated in 1954, after the 50 cm Schmidt telescope had been installed in the first dome. A major extension in 1964 included the relocation of the Double Refractor, which dates from 1899. The final dome to be erected contains a 1 m Cassegrain telescope, the largest and most modern of the observatory&#039;s telescopes. Today, there are six telescopes at the observatory. The Double Refractor aside, there is also the 16 cm Schr&amp;ouml;der Refractor, which was used for the Cordoba Durchmusterung (the southern extension of the Bonner Durchmusterung).

      <description>]]&gt;&quot;Skalnate Pleso Atlas of the Heavens&quot; Becvar, 1969
