When Thomas Jefferson designed the University of Virginia, he intended it to include an observatory and a center for astronomical study.

While Jefferson did not see those plans come to fruition during his lifetime, in 1877 Leander J. McCormick donated a 26-inch telescope to the University, and an observatory, which now bears the name of its benefactor, was built to house it on Mount Jefferson.

In addition, there have been smaller telescopes used for astronomical observations and other devices stored at the observatory including an impressive array of astrometric instruments.

In over a century of operation, the McCormick Observatory and its publications have recorded countless observations and contributions to astronomical science. Its success has been due to the large number of talented astronomers to work at the University of Virginia, and the history of the Observatory is as much their story as it is that of the building that sits atop Mt. Jefferson.

At the time E. E. Barnard worked at the Lick Observatory the 36 inch refractor was the biggest telescope of the world. Unfortunately due to the bad relationship between Barnard and the director of the Observatory, Barnard didn’t have a lot of opportunities to use this huge telescope. On one of the rare occasions he was able to observe with this telescope he discovered the fifth moon of Jupiter.

The Hooker 100-inch telescope is named after John D. Hooker, who provided the funds for the giant mirror. It was the largest telescope in the world from 1917 to 1948. Many great discoveries were made with the 100-inch telescope, including Edwin Hubble's landmark work on the expansion of the Universe and the establishment of the cosmic distance scale. The first optical interferometer ever used for astronomical research was used on the 100-inch telescope to measure the sizes of distant stars for the first time in 1919.

In the beginning E. E. Barnard wasn’t a great fan of reflectors. He didn’t believe that reflectors could have any scientific importance. Only at the end of his life he understood the importance and the advantages of reflectors.

300-Foot Telescope Collapse At 9:43 p.m. EST on Tuesday the 15th of November 1988, the 300-foot telescope in Green Bank collapsed. The collapse was due to the sudden failure of a key structural element -- a large gusset plate in the box girder assembly that formed the main support for the antenna.

The loss of the 300-Foot telescope resulted in the Green Bank Telescope Project.

Caption: “Dr. S.I. Bailey of the Harvard Observatory came in his automobile”

Solon Irving Bailey (December 29, 1854 in Lisbon, New Hampshire – June 5, 1931 in Norwell, Massachusetts) was an American astronomer and discoverer of the main-belt asteroid 504 Cora, on June 30, 1902.

Bailey joined the staff of Harvard College Observatory in 1887. He received an M.A. from there in 1888 in addition to his previous M.A. from Boston University. After the observatory received the "Boyden Fund" bequest from the will of Uriah A. Boyden, Bailey played a major role in finding a site for Boyden Station in Arequipa, Peru, and was in charge of it from 1892 to 1919.

He was also one of the first to carry out meteorological studies in Peru, traveling extensively in desolate areas at very high altitude. Boyden Station was moved to South Africa in 1927 due to better weather conditions and became known as the Boyden Observatory.

He made extensive studies of variable stars in globular clusters in the southern skies. He also performed a light-curve analysis measured the rotaion period of the near-Earth asteroid 433 Eros during its 1903 opposition with great accuracy. Bailey was acting director of Harvard College Observatory from 1919 to 1921 after the death of Edward Charles Pickering and prior to the appointment of Harlow Shapley. He worked as a senior colleague with Henrietta Leavitt. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1892. Irving died at his summer home in Hanover, from an illness caused by heart disease, in 1931

The Harvard College Observatory (HCO) is an institution managing a complex of buildings and multiple instruments used for astronomical research by the Harvard University Department of Astronomy. It is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, and was founded in 1839. With the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, it forms part of the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

HCO houses a collection of approximately 500,000 astronomical plates taken between the mid-1880s and 1989 (with a gap from 1953–68). This 100-year coverage is a unique resource for studying temporal variations in the universe. The Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard project is digitally scanning and archiving these photographic plates.
