This is one of the first photos Barnard made with the Willard Lens in 1889. It market the beginning of his photos of the Milky Way and the discovery of the Dark Nebula, called the Barnard Nebula.

The nebula photographed is IC 4603 surrounding the star Rho Ophiuchus.
